Retired teacher and pathologist Barbara McCraw is a Master Quilter whose pieces have been exhibited across North America and Europe. She has created quilts celebrating figures like Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu and the Obamas. Her pieces are in numerous collections including the James Museum of Western Art, the Denton County African-American museum, the Denton County Courthouse museum, the University of Michigan and North Carolina Central University.

Many people think of quilts as utilitarian bedcovers made for warmth and some think of it as a lost art. Quilting is now considered an art form, and I use this art to express my creativity, my heritage, and to tell stories that are important to me.
While many may think of quilting as a lost art, or something your grandmother and her friends used to do to pass the time while gossiping, you will find that quilting today is very much a new and enriched art form.

Barbara’s hand appliqued quilt, Family Reunion, took two and a half years to complete and was quilted on her home sewing machine. The quilt is an original one-of-a-kind design.
